There is a certain dehumanization in Mortensen’s approach to the model, a return of the body to an object without meaning, in front of the camera. Mortensen saw models as clay that form the image, a body was articulated only by the operator’s intention. He wanted to strip the figure from its emotion and personality, so that we, as an audience, could consider the body as a formed prop and stare at the image as the essence, and not the subject.

In Lino’s case she is the model, the operator / photographer, the subject and the image at the same time. They both came into being at a time when civilization was in a state of collapse, and they both exemplify the idea of the liberating power of art and culture. Looking at them in parallel brings out their similarities and differences and reveals that to some extent they serve to complement one another: for the one, the focus is on mass-produced articles and their everyday usage; the idea of universalism; and the design of consumer goods; for the other, encounters with unique artworks; the experience of diversity; and the critiquing of capitalist consumerism. By virtue of its form, a book is finite, a neat vessel that lends itself to those narratives with a beginning and end. Krijno’s work, however, is not finite; it has no resolution or discernible moments that can be easily pointed at, bound and labelled. And neither does it ebb or flow in tidy rhythms but accumulates, constantly and relentlessly. If anything, Krijno’s work feels — as it always has — more akin to some outpouring of seemingly blithe, childlike play: disorientating and fantastical, and at times almost absurd, but wondrous nevertheless. It is this outpouring though that puts Krijno’s work at odds with the book.

Yet for all of this, the book, of which Collages 2020-22 is the latest and most generous, feels a necessary endeavour. When seen in this way, en masse yet contained, it is arguably when we can best understand Krijno. Here we can understand the gravity of performance and process; understand how his work is always more than the sum of its parts; understand how he drifts in one direction to unravel new forms and ideas before returning to a more familiar albeit now different path. And we can understand that for all the similarities his work has with unbridled play, there is something more pointed, more intentional; a kind of persistence and eagerness to exhaust all possibilities that does not exist in the wholly innocent play of a child. Seen in an exhibition or online, one fragmented and the other truly endless, these characteristics and intentions feel more hidden, less tangible. The space in between everyday objects become the basis from which unexpected abstract shapes are systematically derived. The artist then uses these abstract shapes in the creation of networks. Tis is how this publication Idiosyncratic Copy Machine was conceived. In collaboration with Niek Pladet, a new procedure was developed that applies the logic of the Idiosyncratic Machine in the graphic realm. Two shapes were placed on the plate glass of a photocopier, copied and cut out. The resulting remainder then became the original for a new copy, again yielding a reminder to be worked with. These steps were repeated 30 times. The reader views infrastructures not only as material phenomena and physical networks but also as immaterial relations and symbolic actions, which, in visible and invisible ways, form our present and, hence, our horizon of aesthetic perception. The two invited 136 artists to an improvised darkroom in Ivry-sur-Seine near Paris, where they were asked to produce a series of eight photograms. The photogram is an imprint of light on photosensitive paper. The project—a homage to the early days of photography and the avant-garde experiments of the twentieth century—presented an alternative to the mainstream forms of the contemporary art world based on the shared use of resources, a playful questioning of the idea of authorship, and the premise of an alternative mode of collectivity. (1926–28), which showed the kitchen in the Gropius House complete with all the latest domestic appliances it was equipped with. The Dessau Masters’ Houses were not only showcases of “new living” (Neues Wohnen) but also places where modern methods of housekeeping could be demonstrated. The topical relevance of this question was discussed at the 2015 Haushaltsmesse, an international trade fair on the art of housekeeping and budgeting. The publication Housekeeping in the Modern Age, which takes a documentary approach to this subject, now brings together these different viewpoints eyeing the question through the prism of the problems we face today. In the face of climate change and dwindling resources, the externalized costs of running a modern household are back on the (kitchen) table. Dhondt’s work is a kind of monument to temporariness. The constructions are based on the dimensions of personal space. These spatial demarcations and primary sculptures become altered into nomadic symbols, so to speak, and function as poetic podia for resistance. The new series presented therein has its origins in just one photography session held by Kooiker in Tokyo in 2015, as part of a brief residency on the invitation of G/P gallery. Kooiker shot about a dozen colour photographs of a professional model posing nearly naked. In a modest pin-up pose the anonymous woman is seen on her back, left arm raised toward her head in a curve, and shoulder pushing a set of Venetian blinds to the right, that is casting a striped shadow onto her body.

In the spring of 2016, an early part of the series was first shown under the title History X at tegenboschvanvreden gallery in Amsterdam. Kooiker had revised a few of the nearly identical images in Photoshop, freely altering layer after layer, often stretching the image beyond recognition while exploiting Photoshop’s complete colour spectrum. The large inkjet prints he made from his experiments conveyed a subtle painterly effect.

Expanding his series, Kooiker downsized the image to a square format, shifting the focus to the model’s bottom, while he kept labouring on and experimenting with this basic image in Photoshop. For Tokyo, Kooiker selected 106 from several hundreds of images. The book presents the widest array of possible variations on a theme. For viewers well-versed in twentieth-century art it is almost impossible not to be reminded of movements in art such as constructivism, cubism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism, and so on.

But Tokyo doesn’t show paintings. Instead, Kooiker pushed photography to its very outer limits. The resulting images might resemble the art of painting, but in the end it amounts to neither painting nor photography. Kooiker has travelled the dual track of image abstraction and obsessive repetition of a single digital cliché, thereby permitting himself ultimate freedom. It resulted in a high-spirited picture volume, devoid of any narrative editing, walking the line between art catalogue and artist’s book.

Co-published with Art Beat Publishers (Japan).

21 × 28 cm, 236 p, ills. colour, paperback

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0354/9298/6939/files/PK_0000_000_coverenglish_jpg_1280x_1f2b99e4-08e4-46af-b568-fd9348f127d8.webp?v=1695722266
sleek-magazine-78-bliss
Sleek magazine 78 - Bliss

Cover: Lia Lia

Photography: Osman Özel

Featuring: Jean Paul Gaultier, Sven Marquardt, Homi K.
